Yesterday we took Tess to the vet's, who told us that there is nothing more that can be done. Keep her on the steroids, antibiotics and painkillers, and bring her back next Wednesday, although she did not expect her to last until then.
Tess is comfortable, constantly hungry (steroids do that), but needs to go outside to relieve herself every two to three hours. We now take turns, and stay with her all day and all night.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time.
We feel we have all known Tess for so long now and, as Labrador lovers, know exactly the pain you are going through. Our thoughts are with you all.

It seems that the reward for all those years of love and fun is a broken heart. No matter how much we tell you that Tess has lived the life all Labradors should have, I know you will feel that you have been short-changed.

Dear Tess and family, we have been watching out for an update over the last couple of weeks and knew Tess might not be doing very well. Thank you so much for letting us know. So sorry to hear she may be nearing her last few days. She and you have given us so much pleasure over the years, following her progress from puppyhood. It was you who inspired us to start our own Dogblog.
We can see Tess has had a fantastic, much loved life and though it will break your hearts to lose her and her to leave you, you are all the richer for having had each other - and so are we for sharing with you. Lots of love, Helen, Ian and Roddy xxx

This breaks my heart. Whenever we are having trouble with Dixie I always remember rule #10 of the dog 10 commandments.
" Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: "I cannot bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death. Remember that I love you."
I will be thinking about your family. Dogs only break our heart once, and that is when they are no longer with us. I hope you are able to keep her comfortable and happy for as long as you can.
